Z with Accent (ž ź ż) on Keyboard: How to Type Z with Accents

Z with Accent (ž ź ż) on Keyboard: How to Type Z with Accents

To type Z with accent, use Alt + 0158 for ž on Windows, press and hold Z on Mac, or copy ž ź ż from the box below.

On Windows, hold the Alt key and type 0158 on the number pad to get ž.

On Mac, press and hold the Z key and pick the accent from the popup.

ž is used in Czech, Croatian, Slovenian and Lithuanian, like in žena (woman). ź and ż are both Polish, like in źle and żaba, and many people mix up them.

Below I explain every way to type Z with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.

Z with Accent Copy and Paste

Click on any letter in the box and it is copied to your clipboard right away. Then paste it with Ctrl + V on Windows or Command + V on Mac.

Most used Other Z accents

Click a letter to copy it.

This is great for one word. If you need these letters every day, keep reading, the shortcuts below are much faster.

Z with Accent Alt Codes (Windows)

Alt codes are the classic way to type Z with accent on Windows. They work in Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs, and almost any other app.

Here's how to type Z accent using Alt code:

  1. Make sure Num Lock is turned On.
  2. Press and hold the Alt key.
  3. While holding Alt, type the code on the number pad. For example, 0158 for ž.
  4. Release the Alt key and the letter will appear.

Here are the Alt codes for Z with accent:

LetterNameAlt CodeShort Alt Code
žz caronAlt + 0158None
ŽZ caronAlt + 0142None

ź ż are not in the table because Windows has no Alt code for them. Use copy and paste or one of the other methods below.

The 4 digit codes starting with 0 always work, so I recommend using them. The short codes are older and some apps show a different character with them.

The number keys on the top row of your keyboard will not work for Alt codes. You must use the number pad.

Alt Code Not Working on Laptop?

A lot of laptops don't have a number pad at all. Some of them hide one inside the letter keys, which you can turn on with Fn + Num Lock (on some models Fn + F11).

No number pad on your laptop? No worries, the methods below work without it. In Word, the Alt + X method is the easiest.

Also, if your number keys are not typing anything at all, check my guide on number keys not working on HP laptop.

Other Ways to Type Z with Accent on Windows

Using the Emoji Panel or Character Map

  1. Press Windows Key + . (period) to open the emoji panel.
  2. Click on the Symbols tab (the Ω icon).
  3. Select Latin Symbols and click on the Z with accent you need.

Alternatively, you can also use Character Map. Search for Character Map in the Start Menu, find the letter, click on Select and then Copy.

How to Type Z with Accent on Mac

Mac makes this easy, you don't need to remember any codes.

Method 1: Press and Hold the Z Key

  1. Press and hold the Z key on your keyboard.
  2. A small popup will appear with the accents and a number under each one.
  3. Click on the accent you want, or press its number.

On a US English keyboard, the popup includes ž ź ż. Hold Shift + Z for capital letters.

Press and hold not working? It may be turned off. Open Terminal, type the following command, hit Return, and then restart your Mac:

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

Method 2: Using Character Viewer

If there is no shortcut for the letter you need, Character Viewer has all of them.

  1. Press Control + Command + Space.
  2. Click on the expand icon at the top right to open the full Character Viewer.
  3. Search for the name, for example z with dot above, and double-click the letter to insert it.

How to Type Z with Accent in Microsoft Word

Method 1: Unicode and Alt + X

This is my favorite method in Word, because it works for any letter and you don't need a number pad.

Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 017E and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ž.

The codes are 017E (ž), 017A (ź) and 017C (ż). For capitals: 017D (Ž), 0179 (Ź), 017B (Ż).

Method 2: Insert Symbol

  1. Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
  2. Set Font to (normal text).
  3. If you can't find it, type the code (for example 017E) in the Character code box at the bottom.
  4. Select the Z with accent and click on Insert.

How to Type Z with Accent in Google Docs

The Word shortcuts don't work in Google Docs, but Alt codes and Mac Option shortcuts do. Here are two more ways that work on any computer.

Method 1: Special Characters

  1. Click on Insert -> Special characters.
  2. In the search box, type z with caron, z with acute, z with dot above or similar.
  3. Click on the letter to insert it.

You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.

Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut

If you use one accent a lot, let Docs type it for you. Docs can replace a short text with the letter automatically.

  1. Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
  2. In the left box, type a short code like z::. In the right box, paste ž.
  3. Click on OK.

Now every time you type z:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ž. Do the same for other accents.

How to Type Z with Accent on Chromebook

Chromebook doesn't support Alt codes, but it has a Unicode shortcut that works for every letter:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
  2. Type the code of the letter, for example 017e for ž.
  3. Press Space or Enter.

The codes are same as Word: 017e (ž), 017a (ź) and 017c (ż).

How to Type Z with Accent on iPhone and Android

On both iPhone and Android, touch and hold the Z key on the keyboard. A small menu will appear with the accents. Slide your finger to the one you want and lift it.

Which accents you see depends on your keyboard language. If the one you need is missing, add a keyboard for that language in your phone settings, or copy it from the box above.

Other Z Accents (ẓ)

The accents above are the most common, but some languages use other Z accents too. You can copy all of them from the copy and paste box at the top.

  • ẓ (z with dot below): Arabic transliteration. Unicode 1E93.

These letters don't have Alt codes on Windows. Use copy and paste, the emoji panel, or type the Unicode and press Alt + X in Word (or Ctrl + Shift + U on Chromebook).
