X with Accent (ẋ ẍ) on Keyboard: How to Type X with Accents

X with accent (ẋ ẍ) is not used in any common language, but it shows up in phonetic writing, and you can copy it from the box below.

On Windows, there are no Alt codes for these letters. The easiest way is to copy them from the box below, or in Word type the Unicode (for example 1E8B for ẋ) and press Alt + X.

On Mac, press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer and search for x with dot above.

If you need it for phonetics or a math formula, copy and paste is honestly the most easiest way.

Below I explain every way to type X with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.

X with Accent Copy and Paste

The fastest way is copy and paste. Click a letter below, it will be copied, and then press Ctrl + V (or Command + V on Mac) where you want it.

Click a letter to copy it.

Most people only need X with accent once in a while, and for that copy and paste is the easiest. The other methods below are for when you need it more often.

Is There an Alt Code for X with Accent?

No, there isn't. Alt codes (for example Alt + 0233 for é) cover only the most common Western European letters, and ẋ ẍ are not in that list.

Some websites say you can type Alt plus the Unicode number. That does not work in most Windows apps and gives you a wrong character. The methods below work every time.

How to Type X with Accent in Microsoft Word

Method 1: Unicode and Alt + X

This is my favorite method in Word, because it works for any letter and you don't need a number pad.

Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 1E8B and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ẋ.

The codes are 1E8B (ẋ) and 1E8D (ẍ). For capitals: 1E8A (Ẋ), 1E8C (Ẍ).

Method 2: Insert Symbol

  1. Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
  2. Set Font to (normal text) and Subset to Latin Extended Additional.
  3. If you can't find it, type the code (for example 1E8B) in the Character code box at the bottom.
  4. Select the X with accent and click on Insert.

How to Type X with Accent in Google Docs

Google Docs is actually one of the easiest places to type rare accents. Here are two ways.

Method 1: Special Characters

  1. Click on Insert -> Special characters.
  2. In the search box, type x with dot above, x with diaeresis or similar.
  3. Click on the letter to insert it.

You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.

Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut

If you use one accent a lot, let Docs type it for you. Docs can replace a short text with the letter automatically.

  1. Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
  2. In the left box, type a short code like x::. In the right box, paste ẋ.
  3. Click on OK.

Now every time you type x:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ẋ. Do the same for other accents.

How to Type X with Accent on Chromebook

Chromebook doesn't support Alt codes, but it has a Unicode shortcut that works for every letter:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
  2. Type the code of the letter, for example 1e8b for ẋ.
  3. Press Space or Enter.

The codes are same as Word: 1e8b (ẋ) and 1e8d (ẍ).
