R with Accent (ř ŕ ŗ) on Keyboard: How to Type R with Accents

R with accent (ř ŕ ŗ) has no Alt code on Windows, so copy it from the box below or use the Unicode trick in Word.
On Windows, there are no Alt codes for these letters. The easiest way is to copy them from the box below, or in Word type the Unicode (for example 0159 for ř) and press Alt + X.
On Mac, press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer and search for r with caron.
ř is famous Czech letter, like in the composer's name Dvořák and the word řeka (river).
Below I explain every way to type R with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.
R with Accent Copy and Paste
The fastest way is copy and paste. Click a letter below, it will be copied, and then press Ctrl + V (or Command + V on Mac) where you want it.
Click a letter to copy it.
Most people only need R with accent once in a while, and for that copy and paste is the easiest. The other methods below are for when you need it more often.
Is There an Alt Code for R with Accent?
No, there isn't. Alt codes (for example Alt + 0233 for é) cover only the most common Western European letters, and ř ŕ ŗ are not in that list.
Some websites say you can type Alt plus the Unicode number. That does not work in most Windows apps and gives you a wrong character. The methods below work every time.

How to Type R with Accent in Microsoft Word
Method 1: Unicode and Alt + X
This is my favorite method in Word, because it works for any letter and you don't need a number pad.
Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 0159 and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ř.
The codes are 0159 (ř), 0155 (ŕ) and 0157 (ŗ). For capitals: 0158 (Ř), 0154 (Ŕ), 0156 (Ŗ).
Method 2: Insert Symbol
- Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
- Set Font to (normal text).
- If you can't find it, type the code (for example 0159) in the Character code box at the bottom.
- Select the R with accent and click on Insert.
How to Type R with Accent in Google Docs
Google Docs is actually one of the easiest places to type rare accents. Here are two ways.
Method 1: Special Characters
- Click on Insert -> Special characters.
- In the search box, type r with caron, r with acute, r with cedilla or similar.
- Click on the letter to insert it.
You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.
Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut
If you use one accent a lot, let Docs type it for you. Docs can replace a short text with the letter automatically.
- Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
- In the left box, type a short code like r::. In the right box, paste ř.
- Click on OK.
Now every time you type r:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ř. Do the same for other accents.
How to Type R with Accent on Chromebook
Chromebook doesn't support Alt codes, but it has a Unicode shortcut that works for every letter:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
- Type the code of the letter, for example 0159 for ř.
- Press Space or Enter.
The codes are same as Word: 0159 (ř), 0155 (ŕ) and 0157 (ŗ).
How to Type R with Accent on iPhone and Android
On both iPhone and Android, touch and hold the R key on the keyboard. A small menu will appear with the accents. Slide your finger to the one you want and lift it.
Which accents you see depends on your keyboard language. If the one you need is missing, add a keyboard for that language in your phone settings, or copy it from the box above.
Other R Accents (ṛ)
The accents above are the most common, but some languages use other R accents too. You can copy all of them from the copy and paste box at the top.
- ṛ (r with dot below): Sanskrit and Hindi transliteration. Unicode 1E5B.
These letters don't have Alt codes on Windows. Use copy and paste, the emoji panel, or type the Unicode and press Alt + X in Word (or Ctrl + Shift + U on Chromebook).
