L with Accent (ł ĺ ľ ļ) on Keyboard: How to Type L with Accents

The easiest way to type L with accent (ł ĺ ľ ļ) is to copy it from the box below, because Windows has no Alt code for these letters.

On Windows, there are no Alt codes for these letters. The easiest way is to copy them from the box below, or in Word type the Unicode (for example 0142 for ł) and press Alt + X.

On Mac, press and hold the L key and pick the accent from the popup.

ł is the one most people need. It is a Polish letter, like in Łódź and złoty, and it sound like the English w.

Below I explain every way to type L with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.

Most people only need L with accent once in a while, and for that copy and paste is the easiest. The other methods below are for when you need it more often.

Is There an Alt Code for L with Accent?

No, there isn't. Alt codes (for example Alt + 0233 for é) cover only the most common Western European letters, and ł ĺ ľ ļ are not in that list.

Some websites say you can type Alt plus the Unicode number. That does not work in most Windows apps and gives you a wrong character. The methods below work every time.

  1. Press and hold the L key on your keyboard.
  2. A small popup will appear with the accents and a number under each one.

How to Type L with Accent in Microsoft Word

Method 1: Unicode and Alt + X

This is my favorite method in Word, because it works for any letter and you don't need a number pad.

Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 0142 and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ł.

The codes are 0142 (ł), 013A (ĺ), 013E (ľ) and 013C (ļ). For capitals: 0141 (Ł), 0139 (Ĺ), 013D (Ľ), 013B (Ļ).

Method 2: Insert Symbol

  1. Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
  2. Set Font to (normal text).
  3. If you can't find it, type the code (for example 0142) in the Character code box at the bottom.
  4. Select the L with accent and click on Insert.

How to Type L with Accent in Google Docs

Google Docs is actually one of the easiest places to type rare accents. Here are two ways.

Method 1: Special Characters

  1. Click on Insert -> Special characters.
  2. In the search box, type l with stroke, l with acute, l with caron or similar.
  3. Click on the letter to insert it.

You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.

Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut

If you use one accent a lot, let Docs type it for you. Docs can replace a short text with the letter automatically.

  1. Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
  2. In the left box, type a short code like l::. In the right box, paste ł.
  3. Click on OK.

Now every time you type l:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ł. Do the same for other accents.

How to Type L with Accent on Chromebook

Chromebook doesn't support Alt codes, but it has a Unicode shortcut that works for every letter:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
  2. Type the code of the letter, for example 0142 for ł.
  3. Press Space or Enter.

The codes are same as Word: 0142 (ł), 013a (ĺ), 013e (ľ) and 013c (ļ).

How to Type L with Accent on iPhone and Android

On both iPhone and Android, touch and hold the L key on the keyboard. A small menu will appear with the accents. Slide your finger to the one you want and lift it.

Which accents you see depends on your keyboard language. If the one you need is missing, add a keyboard for that language in your phone settings, or copy it from the box above.

Other L Accents (ŀ ḷ)

The accents above are the most common, but some languages use other L accents too. You can copy all of them from the copy and paste box at the top.

  • ŀ (l with middle dot): Catalan. Unicode 0140.
  • ḷ (l with dot below): Asturian, transliteration. Unicode 1E37.

These letters don't have Alt codes on Windows. Use copy and paste, the emoji panel, or type the Unicode and press Alt + X in Word (or Ctrl + Shift + U on Chromebook).

Is ł a l with accent? Not really. In Polish, ł is a separate letter of the alphabet with its own sound, so Łódź is pronounced something like "wooj".

For websites and HTML, you can use these codes: ł (ł), ĺ (ĺ), ľ (ľ) and ļ (ļ).
