F with Accent (ḟ ƒ) on Keyboard: How to Type F with Accents

F with accent is rare, so you won't find it on your keyboard, but you can copy ḟ and ƒ from the box below in one click.
On Windows, hold the Alt key and type 0131 on the number pad to get ƒ.
On Mac, just press Option + F to type ƒ.
ḟ (f with dot above) comes from old Irish writing. ƒ (f with hook) is a letter in the Ewe language of Ghana and Togo, and it was also used as symbol of the old Dutch guilder.
Below I explain every way to type F with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.
F with Accent Copy and Paste
The fastest way is copy and paste. Click a letter below, it will be copied, and then press Ctrl + V (or Command + V on Mac) where you want it.
Click a letter to copy it.
This is great for one word. If you need these letters every day, keep reading, the shortcuts below are much faster.
F with Accent Alt Codes (Windows)
On Windows, the most popular way to type accented F is Alt codes. They works in nearly every app, from Word to your web browser.
Here's how to type F accent using Alt code:
- Make sure Num Lock is turned On.
- Press and hold the Alt key.
- While holding Alt, type the code on the number pad. For example, 0131 for ƒ.
- Release the Alt key and the letter will appear.
Here are the Alt codes for F with accent:
| Letter | Name | Alt Code | Short Alt Code |
|---|---|---|---|
| ƒ | f hook | Alt + 0131 | Alt + 159 |
ḟ is not in the table because Windows has no Alt code for it. Use copy and paste or one of the other methods below.
The 4 digit codes starting with 0 always work, so I recommend using them. The short codes are older and some apps show a different character with them.
The number keys on the top row of your keyboard will not work for Alt codes. You must use the number pad.
Alt Code Not Working on Laptop?
A lot of laptops don't have a number pad at all. Some of them hide one inside the letter keys, which you can turn on with Fn + Num Lock (on some models Fn + F11).
No number pad on your laptop? No worries, the methods below work without it. In Word, the Alt + X method is the easiest.
Also, if your number keys are not typing anything at all, check my guide on number keys not working on HP laptop.

How to Type F with Accent in Microsoft Word
Method 1: Unicode and Alt + X
This is my favorite method in Word, because it works for any letter and you don't need a number pad.
Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 0192 and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ƒ.
The codes are 1E1F (ḟ) and 0192 (ƒ). For capitals: 1E1E (Ḟ), 0191 (Ƒ).
Method 2: Insert Symbol
- Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
- Set Font to (normal text).
- If you can't find it, type the code (for example 1E1F) in the Character code box at the bottom.
- Select the F with accent and click on Insert.
How to Type F with Accent in Google Docs
The Word shortcuts don't work in Google Docs, but Alt codes and Mac Option shortcuts do. Here are two more ways that work on any computer.
Method 1: Special Characters
- Click on Insert -> Special characters.
- In the search box, type f with dot above, f with hook or similar.
- Click on the letter to insert it.
You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.
Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut
If you use one accent a lot, let Docs type it for you. Docs can replace a short text with the letter automatically.
- Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
- In the left box, type a short code like f::. In the right box, paste ƒ.
- Click on OK.
Now every time you type f:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ƒ. Do the same for other accents.
How to Type F with Accent on Chromebook
Chromebook doesn't support Alt codes, but it has a Unicode shortcut that works for every letter:
- Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
- Type the code of the letter, for example 0192 for ƒ.
- Press Space or Enter.
The codes are same as Word: 1e1f (ḟ) and 0192 (ƒ).
How to Type F with Accent on iPhone and Android
Phone keyboards normally don't have F with accent. The simple way is to copy it from the copy box on your phone and paste it where you need.
