M with Accent (ḿ ṁ ṃ) on Keyboard: How to Type M with Accents

M with accent (ḿ ṁ ṃ) is very rare and no keyboard has it, so copy and paste from the box below is the best way to type it.

On Windows, there are no Alt codes for these letters. The easiest way is to copy them from the box below, or in Word type the Unicode (for example 1E3F for ḿ) and press Alt + X.

On Mac, press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer and search for m with acute.

You mostly see this letters when Sanskrit or Hindi words are written in English letters, like saṃskṛta, and in old Irish writing.

Below I explain every way to type M with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.

For M with accent, copy and paste is honestly the best method for most people, because there is no simple keyboard shortcut for this letters.

Is There an Alt Code for M with Accent?

No. Windows Alt codes (like Alt + 0233 for é) only cover a small set of Western European letters, and none of the main M accents are in that set.

Be careful with codes you find online. The Unicode of a letter is not the same as its Alt code, so typing Alt + the Unicode number on the number pad will give you a different character. Use the methods below instead.

The codes are 1E3F (ḿ), 1E41 (ṁ) and 1E43 (ṃ). For capitals: 1E3E (Ḿ), 1E40 (Ṁ), 1E42 (Ṃ).

Method 2: Insert Symbol

How to Type M with Accent in Google Docs

Google Docs has two good ways to type rare accents, and both work on any computer.

Method 1: Special Characters

  1. Click on Insert -> Special characters.
  2. In the search box, type m with acute, m with dot above, m with dot below or similar.
  3. Click on the letter to insert it.

You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.

Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut

This is my favorite trick for Google Docs. You can make Docs replace a short text with the accent letter automatically.

  1. Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
  2. In the left box, type a short code like m::. In the right box, paste ḿ.
  3. Click on OK.

Now every time you type m:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ḿ. Do the same for other accents.
