U with Accent (ù ú û ü) on Keyboard: How to Type U with Accents

The fastest way to type U with accent (ù ú û ü) is to copy it from the box below, or use Alt codes on Windows and the Option key on Mac.

On Windows, hold the Alt key and type 0252 on the number pad to get ü (u with two dots). Use 0249 for ù, 0250 for ú and 0251 for û.

On Mac, press and hold the U key and pick the accent from the popup. Or press Option + U and then U to type ü.

Below I explain every method to type accented U on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.

U with Accent Copy and Paste

Just need the letter one time? Click on any letter below and it will be copied to your clipboard. Then paste it anywhere with Ctrl + V (Windows) or Command + V (Mac).

Most used Other U accents Pinyin ü with tones

Click a letter to copy it.

Copy and paste is fine for one or two words. But if you type accents a lot, learning the keyboard shortcut will save you a lot of time.

U with Accent Alt Codes (Windows)

Alt codes is the most popular way to type U with accent on Windows. It works in almost every apps, including Word, Excel, Outlook, Google Docs and your web browser.

Here's how to type U accent using Alt code:

  1. Make sure Num Lock is turned On.
  2. Press and hold the Alt key.
  3. While holding Alt, type the code on the number pad. For example, 0252 for ü.
  4. Release the Alt key and the letter will appear.

Here are the Alt codes for all U accents:

LetterNameAlt CodeShort Alt Code
ùu graveAlt + 0249Alt + 151
úu acuteAlt + 0250Alt + 163
ûu circumflexAlt + 0251Alt + 150
üu umlaut (u with two dots)Alt + 0252Alt + 129
ÙU graveAlt + 0217None
ÚU acuteAlt + 0218None
ÛU circumflexAlt + 0219None
ÜU umlaut (U with two dots)Alt + 0220Alt + 154

The 4 digit codes starting with 0 always work, so I recommend using them. The short codes are older and some apps show a different character with them.

The number keys on the top row of your keyboard will not work for Alt codes. You must use the number pad.

Alt Code Not Working on Laptop?

Most of laptops don't have a separate number pad. On some laptops, you can turn on a hidden number pad by pressing Fn + Num Lock (or Fn + F11 on some models). The hidden number pad uses the U, I, O, J, K, L, M keys.

If your laptop don't have one, use the US-International keyboard or the emoji panel below. In Word, you can also use the Alt + X method which works without number pad.

Also, if your number keys are not typing anything at all, check my guide on number keys not working on HP laptop.

Other Ways to Type U with Accent on Windows

Method 1: Using the US-International Keyboard

If you type accents every day, the US-International keyboard layout is the best option. It lets you type accents with normal keys, no codes to remember.

Here's how to add it in Windows 11:

  1. Open Settings from the Start Menu.
Open Settings from Start Menu in Windows 11
  1. Go to Time & language -> Language & region.
  2. Click on three dots next to your language and select Language options.
  3. Under Keyboards, click on Add a keyboard and select United States-International.

Now press Windows Key + Space to switch to the new keyboard.

With US-International keyboard, you first press the accent key and then the letter:

  • ù: press ` (the key under Esc), then U
  • ú: press ' (apostrophe), then U
  • û: press Shift + 6 (^), then U
  • ü: press Shift + ' ("), then U

For capital letters, press Shift + U instead of U. You can also press Right Alt + U for ú and Right Alt + Y for ü.

Note: On this keyboard, the apostrophe and quote keys wait for the next key. To type a normal ' or ", press the key and then Space.

Method 2: Using the Emoji Panel or Character Map

Windows has a built-in symbol panel that works without number pad.

  1. Press Windows Key + . (period) to open the emoji panel.
  2. Click on the Symbols tab (the Ω icon).
  3. Select Latin Symbols and click on the U with accent you need.

Alternatively, you can also use Character Map. Search for Character Map in the Start Menu, find the letter, click on Select and then Copy.

How to Type U with Accent on Mac

Typing accents on Mac is much easier than Windows. No codes needed.

Method 1: Press and Hold the U Key

  1. Press and hold the U key on your keyboard.
  2. A small popup will appear with all U accents and a number under each one.
  3. Click on the accent you want, or press its number.

On a US English keyboard, the popup includes û ü ù ú ū. Hold Shift + U for capital letters.

Press and hold not working? It may be turned off. Open Terminal, type the following command, hit Return, and then restart your Mac:

defaults write -g ApplePressAndHoldEnabled -bool true

Method 2: Using Option Key Shortcuts

Option shortcuts are faster once you remember them. Press the Option combination first, release both keys, and then press U:

  • ù: Option + `, then U
  • ú: Option + E, then U
  • û: Option + I, then U
  • ü: Option + U, then U

For capital letters, press Shift + U in the last step. These shortcuts work in every app on Mac, including Word and Google Docs.

How to Type U with Accent in Microsoft Word

On Windows, Alt codes works in Word. But Word also has its own shortcuts that are easier to remember because the accent key looks like the accent.

Method 1: Word Keyboard Shortcuts

Press the Ctrl combination, release it, and then press U:

  • ù: Ctrl + `, then U
  • ú: Ctrl + ', then U
  • û: Ctrl + Shift + 6 (^), then U
  • ü: Ctrl + Shift + ; (:), then U

Use Shift + U in the last step for capital letters. These shortcuts also work in Outlook, but not in Google Docs or web browsers.

Method 2: Unicode and Alt + X

This one works even on laptops without a number pad.

Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 00FC and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ü.

The codes are 00F9 (ù), 00FA (ú), 00FB (û) and 00FC (ü). For capitals: 00D9, 00DA, 00DB and 00DC.

Method 3: Insert Symbol

  1. Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
  2. Set Font to (normal text) and Subset to Latin-1 Supplement.
  3. Select the U with accent and click on Insert.

Word remembers the symbols you used recently, so next time you will find it right in the Symbol menu.

How to Type U with Accent in Google Docs

Google Docs don't support the Word Ctrl shortcuts. But Alt codes on Windows and Option shortcuts on Mac works fine. If you can't use those, here are two other ways.

Method 1: Special Characters

  1. Click on Insert -> Special characters.
  2. In the search box, type u with diaeresis, u with acute, u with grave or u with circumflex.
  3. Click on the letter to insert it.

You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.

Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut

This is my favorite trick for Google Docs. You can make Docs replace a short text with the accent letter automatically.

  1. Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
  2. In the left box, type a short code like u::. In the right box, paste ü.
  3. Click on OK.

Now every time you type u:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ü. Do the same for other accents.

How to Type U with Accent on Chromebook

Alt codes don't work on Chromebook. Instead, ChromeOS has its own Unicode shortcut:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
  2. Type the code of the letter, for example 00fc for ü.
  3. Press Space or Enter.

The codes are same as Word: 00f9 (ù), 00fa (ú), 00fb (û) and 00fc (ü).

If you type accents often, add the US International keyboard. Go to Settings -> Device -> Keyboard and inputs -> Input settings, click on Add input methods, and select US International keyboard. It works same as the Windows one explained above.

How to Type U with Accent on iPhone and Android

On both iPhone and Android, touch and hold the U key on the keyboard. A small menu will appear with all the U accents. Slide your finger to the one you want and lift it.

This works with the default iPhone keyboard and with Gboard and Samsung Keyboard on Android.

Other U Accents (ū ŭ ů ű ų ǔ ư)

The four accents above are the most common, but some languages use other U accents too. You can copy all of them from the copy and paste box at the top.

  • ū (u with macron, or u with a line over it): Latvian, Lithuanian, Māori and Japanese romaji. Unicode 016B.
  • ŭ (u with breve): Esperanto. Unicode 016D.
  • ů (u with ring, or u with a circle on top): Czech. Unicode 016F.
  • ű (u with double acute): Hungarian. Unicode 0171.
  • ų (u with ogonek): Lithuanian. Unicode 0173.
  • ǔ (u with caron): Chinese Pinyin, third tone. Unicode 01D4.
  • ư (u with horn): Vietnamese. Unicode 01B0.
  • ǖ ǘ ǚ ǜ (ü with tone marks): Chinese Pinyin, like in lǜ (green). Unicode 01D6, 01D8, 01DA, 01DC.

These letters don't have Alt codes on Windows. Use copy and paste, the emoji panel, or type the Unicode and press Alt + X in Word (or Ctrl + Shift + U on Chromebook). On Mac, ū is in the press and hold popup. For the others, add the ABC Extended input source in System Settings -> Keyboard -> Input Sources.

Umlaut or diaeresis? Both look the same (ü), a u with two dots on top. In German it is called umlaut and it changes the sound of the letter, like in über. In Spanish it is called diaeresis and it means the U is pronounced, like in pingüino.

For websites and HTML, you can use these codes: ù (ù), ú (ú), û (û) and ü (ü).
