J with Accent (ĵ ǰ) on Keyboard: How to Type J with Accents

J with accent is rare: ĵ is used in Esperanto and ǰ in some phonetic writing, and the easiest way to type both is to copy them from the box below.

On Windows, there are no Alt codes for these letters. The easiest way is to copy them from the box below, or in Word type the Unicode (for example 0135 for ĵ) and press Alt + X.

On Mac, press Control + Command + Space to open Character Viewer and search for j with circumflex.

If you are writing Esperanto, ĵ is very common letter, like in ĵurnalo (newspaper) and ĵaŭdo (Thursday).

Below I explain every way to type J with accent on Windows, Mac, Microsoft Word, Google Docs, Chromebook, and phones. There is also a quick reference table at the end with all the codes in one place.

For J with accent, copy and paste is honestly the best method for most people, because there is no simple keyboard shortcut for this letters.

Is There an Alt Code for J with Accent?

No. Windows Alt codes (like Alt + 0233 for é) only cover a small set of Western European letters, and none of the main J accents are in that set.

Some websites say you can type Alt plus the Unicode number. That does not work in most Windows apps and gives you a wrong character. The methods below work every time.

How to Type J with Accent in Microsoft Word

Method 1: Unicode and Alt + X

This is my favorite method in Word, because it works for any letter and you don't need a number pad.

Type the Unicode of the letter and then press Alt + X. For example, type 0135 and press Alt + X, and Word will change it to ĵ.

The codes are 0135 (ĵ) and 01F0 (ǰ). For capitals: 0134 (Ĵ).

Method 2: Insert Symbol

  1. Go to Insert -> Symbol -> More Symbols.
  2. Set Font to (normal text).
  3. If you can't find it, type the code (for example 0135) in the Character code box at the bottom.
  4. Select the J with accent and click on Insert.

How to Type J with Accent in Google Docs

Google Docs has two good ways to type rare accents, and both work on any computer.

Method 1: Special Characters

  1. Click on Insert -> Special characters.
  2. In the search box, type j with circumflex, j with caron or similar.
  3. Click on the letter to insert it.

You can also draw the letter with your mouse in the box on the left side, and Google Docs will find it for you.

Method 2: Create your Own Shortcut

If you use one accent a lot, let Docs type it for you. Docs can replace a short text with the letter automatically.

  1. Go to Tools -> Preferences and open the Substitutions tab.
  2. In the left box, type a short code like j::. In the right box, paste ĵ.
  3. Click on OK.

Now every time you type j:: followed by a space, Docs will change it to ĵ. Do the same for other accents.

How to Type J with Accent on Chromebook

Chromebook doesn't support Alt codes, but it has a Unicode shortcut that works for every letter:

  1. Press Ctrl + Shift + U. You will see an underlined u.
  2. Type the code of the letter, for example 0135 for ĵ.
  3. Press Space or Enter.

The codes are same as Word: 0135 (ĵ) and 01f0 (ǰ).

For websites and HTML, you can use these codes: ĵ (ĵ) and ǰ (ǰ).
