How to Factory Reset HP Laptop on Windows without Password

So, you want to factory reset your HP laptop, but don’t remember the administrator password?

There are 3 methods to factory reset your HP laptop when you don’t know its Windows password. I will start with the simplest one:

  1. Using Windows Login Options
  2. Using Windows Recovery
  3. Using HP Recovery Manager

The instruction in this guide applies to all HP laptops, such as HP ProBook, Elitebook, Spectre, etc. running on either Windows 10 or Windows 11.

Using Windows Login Options

Both Windows 11 and Windows 10 allow users to access the troubleshoot and reset option without logging in to Windows. To do that, follow these steps:

  1. Turn On your laptop.
  2. On the Windows login screen, press and hold the shift button and click on the Power button. Select Restart option.
  1. Now, when your PC reboots, it will open the boot window. Click on Troubleshoot option.
  2. On the next window, select the Reset this PC option.
  1. If you want to keep your files, select the Keep my files option and if you don’t, then select Remove everything option.

Reset without Booting Windows using Windows Recovery

If your HP laptop is unable to boot Windows, then you won’t be able to try the above workaround.

However, luckily there is another method as well to reset your laptop.

  1. Turn off your laptop and then turn it On again while pressing the F11 function key continuously. This will open up Choose an option screen with a blue background.
  2. Select Troubleshoot option.
  1. Select the Reset this PC option.
  2. If you want to keep your files, select the Keep my files option and if you don’t, then select Remove everything option.

In the next window, you will be asked about which partitions you want to wipe. If you have multiple partitions, then you can either only select the Windows partition or all your drives.

  1. Next, select the Reset button.

Reset without Booting Windows using HP Recovery Manager

If you can’t access Windows Recovery options, then you have only one option left, which is to use the HP Recovery manager to reset your HP laptop without a password.

Here’s how to do that:

  1. Turn off your laptop for about a minute and then turn it On again while pressing the F11 key until you see a Choose an option window.
  2. Click on Troubleshoot.
  3. On the next screen, select Recovery Manager.
  1. Select the Recover without backing up your files option.
  1. Follow on-screen instructions.

If everything goes right, your HP laptop will be restored to factory setting within 10-15 minutes.

I hope that after following the above methods, you will be able to restore default settings on your HP laptop even if you do not know its Windows password.
